A weekend with Rabbi Eliezer Sandler
Rabbi Sandler, originally from South Africa, is well known in the United States as a dynamic and entertaining lecturer on a broad range of Jewish topics. In Flatbush, Brooklyn, for over a decade, his Shabbat afternoon shiurim have continued to draw large crowds. His extensive background and experience in the Rabbinate and military chaplaincy make him a most thought-provoking personality.
He served as the rabbi of the Touro Synagogue in Newport, RI, the Chairman of the Southern African Rabbinical Association and Senior Lecturer of JSUP - a program that combined Jewish Studies and degree courses through the University of South Africa.
Rabbi Sandler is most widely known for the twelve years that he served as the Chief Jewish Chaplain to the South African Defense Force. During that period he saw service in peacetime, as well as in operations. Due to the draft, thousands of Jewish soldiers passed through his hands in the Army, Navy and Air Force. In the military he developed a wide array of facilities for Jewish soldiers that included educational programs, a network of kosher facilities in bases across South Africa and Namibia, as well as the production of educational movies on Jewish topics.
